New Avenues of Honour at Port Adelaide

As part of Remembrance Day activities a special ceremony and plaque unveiling was conducted outside the Alberton Oval, attended by Port Adelaide Football Club CEO, Keith Thomas; City of Port Adelaide Mayor, Gary Johanson; Semaphore Port Adelaide RSL President, Glenn Murray and Avenues of Honour Project Director, David Lawry OAM.

Special guest legatee Mrs Joan Bennett, assisted by students from the Westport Primary School helped to plant a commemorative ‘Lone PIne’ at a memorial garden established for the purpose.

This inspiring and emotional event launched the inaugural Avenues of Honour project for the Port Adelaide district which aims to have living memorials planted for over 500 “Portonians’ who made the supreme sacrifice during WWI.

Comments from those officiating at the ceremony underscored the intense community spirit, leadership and desire of key stakeholders to honour local service men and women and ensure their story is never forgotten.
